Equity
Equity refers to the fair and equitable treatment of all people, while recognizing that people have different needs. Equity is in the design of our systems and processes, and it helps to uphold diversity and inclusion-related goals and actions. Equity is the process; equality is the result.
Diversity
Diversity is a concept that includes physical and other characteristics that distinguish one person from another. These include, but are not limited to: gender, race, ethnicity, physical or intellectual ability, age, culture, ancestry, place of origin, citizenship, religious beliefs, family and marital status, learning styles, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic status, social perspectives, values and beliefs.
Inclusion
Inclusion speaks to the extent to which individuals and groups value, respect and embrace differences in knowledge, preferences and perspectives. An inclusive environment fosters respect for individuals, values them for who they are, and generates a level of supportive energy and commitment so that individuals have the opportunity to contribute, thrive and meet their full potential.
Community Living
Community living means living in the same places as people without disabilities. A community can be a neighborhood, town, or city. It can be any place where disabled and non-disabled people live together. Community living also means getting to make our own choices about our lives. Community Living Toronto was founded on this principle in 1948.
Community Participation Supports (CPS)
Community Living Toronto has evolved from the “former Day Program” (Adult Development Program, Supported Work and Community Activities, Employment Training Services, Gooderham) concept to what is now referred to as “Community Participation Supports (CPS)” that is a more holistic reference to our model that now includes day, evening, and weekend options for community inclusion.
Within the new model of Community Participation Supports (CPS) at Community Living Toronto, we are evolving our supports and services to reflect the choices of people receiving supports, by offering them preferred and new experiences in their neighbourhoods. The pre and post pandemic landscape has changed and so have the needs. We are being agile and intentional with the program and supports being offered. With our strategic goal of putting people we support first, we will continue to grow based on the feedback from our customers and community.
Respite
Is a temporary support service that provides caregivers with a break from their caregiving responsibilities while ensuring that the person receiving care is supported in a safe, appropriate, and meaningful way. Respite can take place in the home or in the community and may include supervision, personal support, or opportunities to participate in activities. Its purpose is to support caregiver well-being, strengthen family capacity, and promote the inclusion and quality of life of the person receiving care.
Intellectual Disability
An intellectual disability is an impairment in cognitive function that affects areas of daily living, such as personal care, language skills, learning abilities, and the capacity to live independently. It is typically identified before adulthood and lasts throughout one’s life. People who have an intellectual disability can face barriers in living the life they want.
Developmental Services Ontario (DSO)
Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) is the access point that helps adults with developmental disabilities and their families connect to available developmental services and supports in their community. DSO confirms eligibility, assesses needs, and helps people navigate and access supports such as housing, community participation, caregiver respite, specialized services, and funding programs like Passport when services become available.
Accessibility
Means making sure everyone can use, understand, and take part in our programs, services, information, and spaces. This includes removing barriers and providing supports so people of all abilities can feel welcome, be included, and fully participate.
