My Placement Experience
By: Khulud Nur, Social Service Worker Student at Centennial College
Throughout my placement experience at Community Living Toronto, I was fortunate enough to have practiced first hand and learned many diverse sides of what goes into a person directed plan; The wide-ranging process of how a plan is established and completed, as well as the amount of work and detail goes into every phase. Another valuable lesson that I learned in my time here, were the many different types of positions available in the Social Service, Developmental Service and Community Development field, which in turn, has provided me with more understanding into the different tasks, roles and responsibilities that I could complete, as a Social Service Worker.
Through my experience, another valuable lesson that I learned is team work. Community Living Toronto is a diverse work environment; there are Community Support Workers, Family Support Workers, Adult Protective Service worker (APSW) and Home Management Consultants to name a few, all working in one office. This large eclectic group of people, including Supervisors and Managers have different strengths and experiences and they work together, organizing their work in sync with one another. Support is always there when I need it and I am also able to expand my learning from different lenses.
Overall, my work placement experience at Community Living Toronto is very inspiring. I am very pleased with the amount knowledge and experience that I gained in the 12 weeks of being a Student with the agency. This College placement is a very important aspect of my learning process and it provides me with the experience and life skills I need in order to find employment in the future. This placement has not only taught me more about people living with an intellectual disability and acquired brain injuries; it has also provided me with the skills and knowledge to continue to be an advocate of change. This is also why I am really excited to continue my second semester placement at Community Living Toronto.
